What do you want to be thankful for?

Philosophy Classroom in Ubud

I'm thankful for everything. In this moment, I'm thankful for Wallace D. Wattles' wisdom on gratitude from his great little book, The Science of Getting Rich.

Led a PhilosophersNotes LIVE! on that book last night ("classroom" above :) and this was one of my favorite sections:

Gratitude
“First, you believe that there is one Intelligent Substance, from which all things proceed; second, you believe that this Substance gives you everything you desire; and third, you relate yourself to it by a feeling of deep and profound gratitude.”

Ahhhhh... Gratitude.

As Wattles says, “You cannot exercise much power without gratitude; for it is gratitude that keeps you connected with Power.”

Let’s get right to the point: What are you grateful for?

Who are you blessed to have in your life right now? Who has supported you in achieving all that you have achieved in your life?

What material things do you have in your life that you’re grateful for? Your house? Your car? Your toilet? (It wasn’t that long ago that the wealthiest person alive didn’t have 99% of what you have... let’s not take the incredible luxuries we have for granted, eh?)

What are 10 things you can choose to be grateful for right now?

1.    ___________________________________________________
2.    ___________________________________________________
3.    ___________________________________________________
4.    ___________________________________________________
5.    ___________________________________________________
6.    ___________________________________________________
7.    ___________________________________________________
8.    ___________________________________________________
9.    ___________________________________________________
10.    ___________________________________________________

Very nice. Now meditate on these things EVERY day, throughout the day. It’s scientifically impossible to be both grateful and depressed at the same time. Seems like a no-brainer decision to me. :)

And, while we’re at it, remember this:

“It is necessary, then, to cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you; and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”

I love that. So, now that we’ve captured some of the wonderful, “positive” things in your list of things to be grateful for, how about another list of all the challenges you’ve had in your life. Can you see how these challenges have shaped you and that without them you wouldn’t be who you are? And, therefore, you should grateful for them!

This list can range from the guy who cut you off on your way to work today--to whom you feel gratitude because he provided a reminder of how you don’t want to show up--to the relationship that ended and opened up the space for you to get to know yourself better and create new, more empowering relationships.

So, what are 5 challenging things that have contributed to your advancement that you can include in your gratitude?

1.    ___________________________________________________
2.    ___________________________________________________
3.    ___________________________________________________
4.    ___________________________________________________
5.    ___________________________________________________

“You want to be rich in order that you may eat, drink, and be merry when it is time to do these things; in order that you may surround yourself with beautiful things, see distant lands, feed your mind, and develop your intellect; in order that you may love men and do kind things, and be able to play a good part in helping the world to find truth.”

Amen.

What do you believe about karma?

Posted on Dec 5th, 2008 by Brian : PhilosophersNotes.com Brian
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 03, 2008:

I'll go with what these peeps say:

The Bhagavad Gita teaches us: “When we do wrong, we come to suffering. When we do good in the world, we come to happiness.”

The Bible teaches: “You reap what you sow.”

Eric Butterworth in Spiritual Economics: “The law is exact: If you give, really work in a giving consciousness, you must receive.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson in his essay, Compensation: “Cause and effect, means and ends, seed and fruit, cannot be severed; for the effect already blooms in the cause, the end preexists in the means, the fruit in the seed.”

Esther & Jerry Hicks describe the Law of Attraction in Ask and It Is Given: “Every thought vibrates, every thought radiates a signal, and every thought attracts a matching signal back. We call that process the Law of Attraction.” The Law of Attraction says: That which is like unto itself is drawn. And so, you might see the powerful Law of Attraction as a sort of Universal Manager that sees to it that all thoughts that match one another line up.”

Selling Without Selling Out

Posted on Dec 2nd, 2008 by Brian : PhilosophersNotes.com Brian

Hola party peeps:

Here's an interview I did at the Aspen Institute in April-ish with Terry Mollner (started Calvert Family of Socially Responsible Investment Funds) on "Selling without Selling Out."

--> Check it.

A bunch of cool peeps were there talking about the sale of their businesses to multi-nationals. Ben & Jerry's, Dagoba, Honest Tea, Stonyfield, Odwalla... (I snuck in as the Internet guy who sold his biz to Gaiam. :)

Fun chat and some other really cool discussions on the site by the founders/ceos of some great conscious businesses. If you're an entrepreneur/into conscious capitalism, me thinks you'll dig it.

What was the last work of art you remember seeing?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 22, 2008:

That would be a second ago:

My beautiful Balinese-crafted statues of Sarasvati and Lakshmi that I'm admiring now! :)

I was inspired to have them made after reading a great story in Deepak Chopra's great little book, "Creating Affluence."

He says:

"Although you love both Goddesses, you must pay more attention to one of them. She is the Goddess of Knowledge, and her name is Sarasvati. Pursue her, love her, and give her your attention. The other Goddess, whose name is Lakshmi, is the Goddess of Wealth. When you pay more attention to Sarasvati, Lakshmi will become extremely jealous and pay more attention to you. The more you seek the Goddess of Knowledge, the more the Goddess of Wealth will seek you. She will follow you wherever you go and never leave you. And
the wealth you desire will be yours forever."

The Law of Attraction

Posted on Nov 22nd, 2008 by Brian : PhilosophersNotes.com Brian

"Every thought vibrates, every thought radiates a signal, and every thought attracts a matching signal back. We call that process the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction says: That which is like unto itself is drawn. And so, you might see the powerful Law of Attraction as a sort of Universal Manager that sees to it that all thoughts that match one another line up." ~ Esther & Jerry Hicks from Ask and It Is Given

That's the best definition of The Law of Attraction I've read. (Like I've said before, this book is pretty much The Bible for The Law of Attraction. :)

In their great book, Ask and It Is Given, Esther and Jerry compare The Law of Attraction to tuning a radio. If we'd like to listen to something on 102.7FM, we can't expect to hear it if our radio's set to 98.7, right?!? Of course not. The radio waves of one frequency can only be received by a matching tuner.

Same thing goes in the "real" world. If we want to receive love and abundance in our life, we need to set our tuner to the same vibrational frequency as love and abundance, eh?

To put it bluntly: If you're a jerk, do you expect to receive an overwhelming abundance of love in your life? It's IMPOSSIBLE. You're putting out all kinds of "jerk" energy and that's pretty much what you'll get back.

I can see it in my own life and I'm sure you can, too. Let's take the most mundane example: I'm calling customer service for something. Now, I can be an impatient, angry jerk and guess what? If the conversation is long enough, typically even the usually kindest customer service agent will respond in kind. On the other hand, I can think about how grateful I am that I live in a world that even allows me to have the "problem" for which I'm seeking support and call with an energy of gratitude and eagerness to light this person's day up. What happens? I have a great little exchange with the agent and we both get off the phone with a smile.

Why is that? Esther and Jerry tell us it's The Law of Attraction. You're going to get back what you put out. "That which is like unto itself is drawn."

Powerful stuff! So let's pick our radio stations consciously (love songs, perhaps ;), and make sure you've got yourself tuned in to hear the wonderful music.

Here's to attracting the experiencing we intend!

Homeostasis

Posted on Nov 21st, 2008 by Brian : PhilosophersNotes.com Brian

You know that thermostat you have in the house? Keeps the temperature within a set range? Bringing you back to the "homeostatic" point you selected?

Well, in his great book, Mastery, George Leonard makes the point that, over a lifetime of certain habits, we've created our own little homeostatis in our lives. And when we change, even for the better, we're going to feel a natural tug back to how things were. So true, eh?

As they say, the bulk of the fuel used in a trip to space is in the lift-off phase when the rocket needs to escape the gravitational pull. Same thing here. So, here are some tips from Leonard on how to deal with the inevitable tug:

  1. "Be aware of the way homeostasis works... don't panic or give up at the first sign of trouble.""Be willing to negotiate with your resistance to change... The fine art of playing the edge in this case involves a willingness to take one step back for every two forward, sometimes vice versa."

  2. "Develop a support system."

  3. "Follow a regular practice."

  4. "Dedicate yourself to lifelong learning."

Powerful lessons from a *great* book. I think you'll dig my Notes on it, too. :)

To growth and the re-calibrating inherent to the process of mastery!!!!
